How ground penetrating radar is used on concrete
Ground penetrating radar (GPR) inspections are typically requested when it is necessary to locate metallic or non-metallic pipes, conduit, re-bar or post-tension cables inside concrete. GPR is a four-step process that includes:
- Placing a survey mat on the site
- Moving a transducer over a pre-defined grid
- Calibrating for the material
- Analyzing the map produced by the scan
Some of the usual grid sizes examined are 24" X 24", 48" X 48" or 96"x96". Color plan views are used to image the details of structures inside the concrete. Results can be provided in hard-copy print-outs or as a digital copy.
